what to write in a wedding card

So you’re going to a wedding. You’ve got your dress sorted, present wrapped and card bought (see my last post for my fave wedding cards of the season). You’ve got your pen at the ready, poised to right some absolutely fabulous message in the card…but your mind goes blank.

Whether you’re attending the wedding of a distant family member, or your best friend, I think writing wedding card messages is so tough. How do you sum up all the fuzzies that the idea of them getting married makes you feel?! And how do you write something in the card that will make it that bit more special and memorable?

I’ve summarised my fave different ideas that I’ve seen over the years for wedding card messages.

Just married

The poem

Writing a short poem on the inside cover of the card is a great way to add a bit of personality to a card. It can be anything from a short, funny limerick, to a longer, more romantic piece, but the bride and groom will love it. The best option is to write your own as you can personalise it for the couple (and they’ll love the effort!) but if the thought of writing a poem leaves you tongue-tied there are plenty around on the web.

A passage from your or the couple’s favourite book or film

I was at a wedding recently and two of the readings were a couple of lines from a book that both the reader and the bride loved. It clearly meant a lot to both of them (hello tears) and the words were absolutely beautiful. Sometimes if you’re struggling to write down how you feel about their wedding you’ll find someone else has already done it for you!

Love never fails

Favourite memories or places

List out your favourite memories or places you’ve been with the couple. They will love being taken down memory lane and thinking of you when they read the card.

Cheesy picture of your happy face

A picture says a thousand words. If you can’t express how happy you are at the thought of the couple getting married, why not take a selfie of your super happy face and stick it in the card. A simple caption of “I couldn’t describe how happy I was for you both, but hopefully this picture illustrates it!” should do the trick!

Give some advice

If you’re married yourself then write some funny marriage advice. Nothing too negative (!) but something that will make them smile when they open your card.

Marriage traditions

When I was bridesmaid recently I sent the bride and groom a wedding fact each day for the fortnight before the wedding. This included interesting snippets about the origins of modern day traditions or insights into weddings in different cultures. Adding one or two facts to your card will help them see their big day in a new light and they’ll be touched by the effort you went to in researching the facts.

Write whatever comes into your head

This may seem daunting, and you may not feel it is the most eloquent passage of text ever written. But it will be good and honest and wonderful. And most importantly the couple will love it and it will be something they treasure forever.

I hope you find those helpful! I’d love to know your ideas too – leave a message in the comments box!
